Multiple drum tracks in one piano roll with fl studio layers

crank's picture
Submitted by crank on Sun, 2006-10-15 20:33.

after boring with chopping audio loops in fl audio tracks
i tend more to use piano roll with ni intakt.

so my latest setup for multi kit/loop drum sequencing:

i have several intakt instances as childrens of one layer.
every intakt sampler has its own key zone.

so i can easily program all drum edits in one piano roll:

Making natural ghosts with peak controller in fl studio

crank's picture
Submitted by crank on Mon, 2006-06-26 11:00.

shit, so easy.
just put peak controller on snare channel and
bound decay time to it.

so snares with less velocities will have less decay.

nice way to make natural hosts from main snare when suitable ghosts are unavailable

Thinking of moving away from fl slicer & sampler because of lo-fi envelopes

crank's picture
Submitted by crank on Sun, 2006-04-23 08:01.

if u think to check this just go to the project options and try playing enveloped drums with lowest & highest timebase (ppq). u will notice that quality changes so that's clear that fl sampler envelopes operate on midi rate rather than audio sample one.

that isnt so wrong, maybe using with most of samples is ok, but drums is definitely ugly harsh when applying envelopes.

so i'm thinking of changing the sampler for drums. that would have audio sample rate envelopes.
at least i think that's essential for me currently.
tired of of that harshness caused by low envelope rate. too discrete.

Layering break with itself: simple & phat

crank's picture
Submitted by crank on Fri, 2006-04-21 20:22.

in fl studio i sometimes use the following to make break more crisp & phat:

1. chop a break in fl slicer.
2. copy teh channel.
3. pitch up the copied channel 5, 7 or 12 semitones up.
4. layer both the channels. so now it's possible to program both at once.
5. tweak envelopes of both slicers for needed groove.
some interesting results when one slicer has short decay , the other does long ones.
another trick is to make slow attack on the lower (first) break, so attack will be done with pitched up hits.
6. another trick is to swap stereo channels of one of the breaks and adjust mix with stereo enhancer. that's useful when break in stereo.
7. switching phase of one of the breaks gives some 'compressed' attack. also option to try.

Rendering tracks to mp3 & wav in FL Studio (Fruity Loops): quality issues

crank's picture
Submitted by crank on Tue, 2006-04-18 06:40.

one day before tetrabrot complained about quality loss in rendered audio in fl studio.
i tried several renders, there's very subtle diff, i can be wrong but got some conclusions:

1. 16bit rendering by default is lossy comparing to 32bit.
2. quantizing 32bit to 16bit in fl isnt so great. so use of external dithering plugins is a nice extra. using internal dithering is ugly.
3. mp3 encoding gave some light compression/gating/distortion in my case. even feeling of drums changed. that's mainly because air between drum hits was eaten by some degree. probably mp3 encoding algorithm that neglects 'junk' audio. pity fl studio doesnt allow to tweak lame encoder so it's out of control.

so i tried to export to 32bit and then encode to mp3 with Fraunhofer codec with 192kbps.
i got much smoother breathy sound than rendering directly to mp3 from fl studio with the same bitrate.
will be preparing mp3 that way in the future.

Layering beats / breaks / drums with FL Slicer

crank's picture
Submitted by crank on Tue, 2006-02-28 18:42.

my latest tendency to layer multiple beats gave me one problem - i need chop & rearrange beats simultaneously while preserving ability to have a dedicated bus for each beat.

since i'm currently using 2 bar beats (premade) sliced in fl slicer by 1/2 beat for rearranging in piano roll the solution came quickly: just use common layer for several fl slicers where all beats intended for layering together are sliced by 1/2 beat.

new fl studio 6's mixer: my mixing technique's made easier

with new features of fl's mixer such as
more convinient routing, more useful meters, resizable window,
movable fx buses
i've finally begun using my mixing technique.

Random synth patch creation: linplug alpha, fl studio, energy xt

crank's picture
Submitted by crank on Mon, 2005-12-05 22:25.

yeah, i love to create random stuff on linplug alpha recently. especially good for pads and fx. today played also. really i love it. random generation is nice cause i can make really crazy or beautiful sounds. why alpha? cause it give usable sounds quite of often after randomizing all controls. fl studio has nice randomize command in 'presets' menu item. tho that's pity cause many synths has many switches like 'mute' which after randomizing ALL controls give no sound at all often. alpha has probably a few or nothing (i dunno really Laughing out loud ) so after randomizing it gives sound in most cases.

Creating beats in FL Studio's audio tracks

crank's picture
Submitted by crank on Sun, 2005-11-13 10:40.

i've tried to make a beat in fl studio's audio tracks and that seems to be fun and creative.
placing samples directly on audio track has several advantages. ones of them are:
- visual feedback
- direct hit length manipulation/resampling

Utilizing oneshot beats in tracks

crank's picture
Submitted by crank on Fri, 2005-10-28 10:58.

before talking about programming beats it's good to talk about utilizing them in tracks. previously i made beats inside a track. now i find that approach not enough flexible. i wont tell drawbacks i'll better tell pros of using ready-made loops.

Programming one shot beats with fl slicer & chopped hits

crank's picture
Submitted by crank on Fri, 2005-09-23 07:59.

chopping breaks is usual bussiness for a dnb producer.
however i think the current software is far from
perfection helping us with that business.

one problem i have to deal constantly - hits' tails.

Layering drums with peak controller: part 2

crank's picture
Submitted by crank on Wed, 2005-08-17 14:39.

there's also another way of using of peak controller's gating: inverted.
especially usefull for 2 cases to fill gapes in one-shot programmed beats:

  1. filling gapes with a break.
  2. filling gapes with 'drum kit air'. 'air' can be generated & looped for example with long reverb tail on main or ghost snare.

i came to some conclusion that i need my FL Studio optimization tips organized in one place. ok, that's here. of coz post your tips also such building mini optimization guide. under optimization i mean performance, production tweaking that speeds up and smoothes production process. that's about cpu usage, window layout, keyboard shortcuts & so on.

FL Morphing Patch - for pads, atmospheres and orchestals

Tetrabrot's picture
Submitted by Tetrabrot on Mon, 2005-08-08 03:41.

This one crossfades 4 different pads using a single XY controller.. if you want to generate interesting atmospheres wether dark or mellow this may work for you. Send 4 different sounds to FX 1,2,3 and 4 ..open the XY Controller and have fun.

Layering drums with peak controller

crank's picture
Submitted by crank on Sun, 2005-08-07 15:57.

ok, when we bother with layering it's sometimes needed that layered drums sound monolithic as there's no layering at all.

one way is to do that is apply volume envelope of the first drum layer to the second.

Complex Morphing in FL

Tetrabrot's picture
Submitted by Tetrabrot on Tue, 2005-08-02 03:49.

Ok, lets begin with this cool technique to make complex crossfades using the LFO tool. Automate a fader using the LFO tool taking care of the phase parameter, it must be at 0, then automate another fader.. the previous lfo you drawed its still in the memory.. if you set the phase parameter to 12'o clock then the automation is exactly the opposite of the one you made before.
Now the basic of morphing is crossfading two sounds, but its not enough.. crossfade the cutoff of two different filters along with the volume crossfade and you can get some tasty wicked sounds. Check the attached example file!.
